I recently returned from a reading and translation tour in China led by US poet Jami Xu. We visited Beijing Normal University where we were welcomed by the Writing Centre and also Nanhai where we were hosted by the local Writers' Association. It was a fantastic experience and we were met with extraordinary warmth and hospitality. China is exploding economically and urbanisation is proceeding on an astonishing scale. There is an amazing sense of capitalism blending with communism and Buddhism. Poetry still has a central tole in the country's culture and still matters to many people, both in classical and contemporary forms. In the touring group were me (UK), Jami (US), Que Mai (Vietnam), Biplab Majee (India), Nicole Sealey (US), John Murillo (US).
